Chernobyl disaster - A non repairable disaster to earth

The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the city of Pripyat, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union.

As of today the disaster completed
30 years 0 months 0 days
or 360 months 0 days
or 1565 weeks 3 days
or 10,958 days
or 262,992 hours
or 15,779,520 minutes
or 946,771,200 seconds

Today after 30 years, site is still not suitable for living. As per the study, the site will be safer for living after another 20,000 years :(

This is the biggest man-made mistake ever made in the history of the nuclear industryThis disaster released massive amount of radioactive materials than the atom bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

The incident occurred when an operator ran a test on an electric control system on reactor 4. The disaster happened of a combination of engineering fault and faulty actions of the operator.

Timeline
  • 1:26:03 – fire alarm activated
  • 1:28 – arrival of local firefighters, Pravik's guard
  • 1:35 – arrival of firefighters from Pripyat, Kibenok's guard
  • 1:40 – arrival of Telyatnikov
  • 2:10 – turbine hall roof fire extinguished
  • 2:30 – main reactor hall roof fires suppressed
  • 3:30 – arrival of Kiev firefighters
  • 4:50 – fires mostly localized
  • 6:35 – all fires extinguished
  • The fire contained inside Reactor 4 continued to burn for many days

Extent of the Chernobyl accident
  • Serious accident in the history of nuclear industry.
  • Two workers died on the night of the accident, and a further 28 people died within a few weeks as a result of acute radiation poisoning.
  • one described his experience of the radiation as "tasting like metal", and feeling a sensation similar to that of pins and needles all over his face.
  • 200,000 cleanup workers who received doses of between 1 and 100 rem (The average annual radiation dose for a U.S. citizen is about .6 rem) died in 1986 and 1987.
  • High levels of radiation in the affected territories has been the dramatic rise in thyroid gland cancer among children.
  • Government evacuated about 115,000 people from the most heavily contaminated areas in 1986, and another 220,000 people in subsequent years
  • From 1986 to 2000, over 350,000 people were evacuated and resettled from the most severely contaminated areas of Belarus.
  • Chernobyl's last reactor was shut down in 2000
  • Officials say that it could take up to 100 years before the station is completely decommissioned.
  • 200 tons of radioactive materials are still inside the reactor. There is a high chance of this washing through rain water and air and slowly polluting the whole earth.
After effect of this disaster: People and animals still suffer

The Environmental group Greenpeace places the eventual death toll at 93,000 cancer deaths world wide.

A shelter was build to prevent the reactor complex from leaking radioactive material into the environment but now it has become weaker.

The old shelter is crumbling and will eventually fail, opening the environment to the worst of the contamination again. A consortium of foreign donors are constructing a replacement. The project was expected to be completed by October 2015 costing some 1.54 billion euro.

On the Way to Earth Day

We have started to celebrate earth day 32 years ago. Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson on April 22, 1970.

Each and every activities we do will impact our land, air and water. We need to use power, manufacturing units and vehicle through out our life time. These produce tons of garbage. Preventing or reducing this garbage is the first step you need to take.

Why this blog

Dear readers,

This is my very first blog post in my life. I am not a writer or a literature guy. So there will be many mistake in my articles and if you find any mistake please ignore and even you can correct me and an advance big Thank you for this.

I had planned to open a blog like this many months ago, but because of my busy schedules I couldn't write or create one. But this summer season made me think and planned to start a blog like this to make all aware also to make me to do some thing on this as far as I can. I have not only planned to write a blog like this, but I have started my on way to bring our earth back to its previous cool condition.

Here you can join with me and post ideas, images, article about saving our Earth. You can post your activities or steps you have taken to bring our Earth back to it previous cool healthy condition.

Thank you,
Delvin
